Palliser Parkade Commercial Concrete Island

Project Type: Commercial
Location: Downtown Calgary, Alberta
Services: Commercial concrete island. Form, pour, broom finish, and site clean-up
Timeline: Single-day completion

  • Pittman Concrete completed a commercial concrete island at Palliser Parkade in one day.
  • Scope included forming, pouring, broom finishing, and clean-up in an active traffic environment.
  • Public safety, traffic redirection, and tight timelines were managed without delay or disruption.

The Project

Pittman Concrete was contracted to construct a broom-finished commercial concrete island at the Palliser parking facility in downtown Calgary. The island was designed to separate vehicle traffic flow and permanently cement the crossing arms in place.

The Challenge

In downtown Calgary, the area around Calgary Tower is one of the city's highest-traffic destinations. The pay station where the island was being constructed sees a constant volume of vehicles moving in and out, and that didn't stop for construction day.

Pittman Concrete had to form, pour, finish, and clean up a commercial concrete island in a single day, all while:

There was no margin for delay. The site couldn't be shut down overnight, and the client needed the crossing arms secured and the island fully finished by end of day.

The Approach

Thorough preparation before arriving on site made the one-day completion possible. Pittman Concrete mapped out the sequencing of work, the traffic redirection plan, and the safety protocols in advance, so when the team arrived, there was no time lost figuring out logistics on the fly.

Throughout the day, the team managed active traffic redirection, maintained a safe working perimeter, and executed the form, pour, and broom finish to commercial specification. Site clean-up was completed the same day, leaving the pay station operational and the concrete island ready to do its job.

The Result

The project was completed in a single day in one of downtown Calgary's most active traffic environments. The concrete island is now a permanent fixture, securing the crossing arms and providing clear traffic separation for the pay station.
